www.porlosninos.com Programa de Carol’s Rice and Beans.

Carol

October Virtual Marathon

Results of October Virtual Marathon sponsored by Scotiabank and Amistad Canada.

We had125 donors who raised $7561. CDN for the Rice and Beans Program with 12 participants. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Cindy Dainhard who volunteered to coordinate the project from Zihuatanejo.

Amistad Canada ended up as the 20th highest fundraiser for the entire event, which is incredible for 7 small-town Mexican charities to pull off. Up until November 18th, we were the second-highest fundraisers of the seven. The charity raising the most was from La Manzanilla, with a population of 2,000, and had 2 families donate almost $9,000. The group from San Miguel de Allende, who overtook us, had over $2,000 in donations come in from a handful of people after the 18th. What I’m trying to say is that these folks had some very heavy hitters donating very large amounts, and our participants did it the hard way, earning it bit by bit, with every $25, $50 or $100 donation. They seriously worked for it!!!

Thank you to everyone who participated and or donated, this year of all years the extra influx of cash really helped. We are still feeding the people of Zihuatanejo, less than before but there is still a need especially for baby formula.

I think even if next year’s Marathon is not virtual, we should do our own. Cindy has it down to a science now!

Thank you so much Cindy for all your hard work, you are amazing!!!

COVID-19 News and Raffle

COVID-19 News and Raffle

Confirmed cases up by 1 and deaths no change.  Hospital has 0 COVID-19 cases.

At our worst, we only had 40 beds filled by Covid patients. With all the protocols in place, we have flattened the curve but we aren’t letting our guard down, and we are maintaining the cautionary level orange on the stoplight system. Not bad statistics for a population of 125,000.

I attended the 2nd «Strategies for Tourism» meeting last week. In-person even. The City and State have implemented every protocol possible to ensure the safety of the residents and tourists. I commented that the number one concern for foreign visitors is their safety. Yesterday the mayor posted a video of the tour buses being sanitized, everyone with masks on and receiving sanitizing gel. Having a clean freak for a mayor who listens, is a good thing. The tourist police are handing out masks downtown. Bus and cab drivers can be fined up to 5 days’ pay for not wearing a mask. People are taking the protocols seriously.

Last week my Doug and I were in town and he suggested we walk through the Mercado. It was absolutely spotless, people were social distancing and wearing masks.

Stores are open, restaurants and hotels are open, all with protocols in place. If you are fortunate enough to have someone arrive at the airport you have to meet them outside, no waiting inside permitted. If you do come don’t expect to attend big events, there aren’t any, for now. Instead, the town is decorating for each holiday to keep the general celebratory feel to our little town.

All this is good news except for the locals who depend on tourism for their livelihood. We thought we would have terminated our food program by now but that is not the case. This week we delivered 195 food hampers, we sent 110 to a women’s group in Coacayul who are starting a Tiaguis to help support families. They are taking initative. We are still supporting our two community kitchens with between 115 and 170 takeouts per day. Daily we receive messages and calls for baby formula and food. So far we have been able to accommodate everyone but not for much longer. I sound like a broken record but if you can help we would really appreciate it, we are extremely grateful to our automatic donors who donate each month. All donations are tax-deductible in Canada, USA or Mexico through this website or Amistad Canada for Por Los Ninos (links here) and if you are here you can deposit your donation directly at Intercam.

Now for the fun part.

For the past 8 years we have done a raffle to support the food program at Casa Para Ninos del Pacifico, our tutoring school for bright impoverished students as well as emergency needs for our scholarship students. Our loyal supporters have generously donated the following accommodation. As school is online we are currently supporting the families with food hampers.

The prizes are:
1. One week all-inclusive at Pacifica Resort Ixtapa
2. One week all-inclusive at Pacifica Resort Ixtapa
3. 5 nights at Inn at Manzanillo Bay, Troncones
4. One week at the Casitas in La Ropa
5. One week, Casa Charlotte La Ropa, 3 bedroom home in Cerro del Vigia, overlooking the Bay
6. One week at Marea Condos in Playa Blanca
7. One week at Villa Montera Troncones 2 bedroom waterfront home
8. One week at Hacienda La Rusa in Barra de Potosi
9. One week at Flamingo Golf, condo in Ixtapa
10. One week Bayview Grande condo in Ixtapa

Subject to availability and good for one year.
Tickets are 50 USD, only 125 available

They sell quickly, usually in about 3 days so don’t hesitate, the kids need the support and the parents need to work so come visit! You can golf, enjoy the fresh air, the ocean and our great climate.

Farewell, Lorenzo!

Farewell, Lorenzo!

For those of you who were not in Zihuatanejo or unable to attend it was a beautiful afternoon. Jimi Mamou opened with a beautiful song in tribute to his long time friend.

Juanito Zihua, Solo Tres and Don Gabriel from Petatlan all played for us in honor of Lorenzo. He did love his music. ABC Diario newspaper filmed the event live. The link is below.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=670207400267993

Thank you to all that attended and sent their heartfelt messages in honor of Lorenzo. I think he would have been pleased. He made a huge impact on this community and he will be missed.

For those who knew Lorenzo well, you know he loved his books, he owned over 1000 books. We spoke often about what we would do with all those books once he was gone but like everything else the answer just fell into place.

We will be building another classroom at Bachilleres Zihua and when I asked what they needed, they said a library. Good answer! We already have books and bookshelves to stock it. Lorenzo loved history and non – fiction, what a fitting place for his books to end up. The books are in English but the students do study English.

Farewell, my friend, I will miss my daily conversations with you to share the latest Por Los Ninos updates. Lorenzo, was not that active the last 3 years with the foundation but he so loved to be kept abreast of what we were up to.

The Ship – Peter and Margie Benziger

The Ship – Peter and Margie Benziger

It is with a heavy heart that I read about the passing of Lorenzo. I am happy he passed peacefully in his sleep.

We first met Lorenzo when we sailed into Zihuatanejo, in 2017, aboard our sailboat, Peregrina.

This is one of our pictures, from 2017, of Lorenzo. He had the kindest face imaginable!

As a sailor, I now think of Lorenzo as setting sail. He, indeed, would make a stout ship. The poem below is a perfect tribute to a fine shipmate.

——
The Ship

I am standing by the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch

until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, ‘There she goes!
Gone where? Gone from my sight – that is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the places of her destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says,
‘There she goes!’ There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout :
‘Here she comes!’

——–

God Bless You Lorenzo.
Safe seas and calm winds,

Peter and Margie Benziger.

For Lorenzo from Margaret Reid

From Margaret Reid – Obituary

Lorenzo a kind gentle soul with many words who could always make my inability and abruptness of the English language correct, soft and gentle. He said all kids in the world were beautiful, but the Mexican children were the most beautiful. Every time we visited kindergartens; he would say don’t you just want to take home a dozen of this cuteness. He will be thoroughly missed at the head chair at the office. Rest In Peace Lorenzo.
